Three shifts the regulars keep

Wednesday's day shift is the teaching one. It costs nothing, there is no list to join, and it has taught most of the canasta players now occupying two tables every night of the week.

Thursday belongs to crib, played on boards that came out of the crib room upstairs and have the initials of long-retired packers cut into them.

Saturday is the only day the bottling room runs while the floor is open, so the whole building smells of whatever is being put up. People book that shift a fortnight out.
